South Street Basement Reno

Nestled in the historic charm of Halifax’s south end, a Victorian home stands as testament to time and transformation. Built in 1910, this residence witnessed decades of evolution, serving as an essential to student life at Dalhousie University.

Driven by a desire to reclaim the home's original essence and appearance, a young family of four embarked on a journey of restoration, guided by the admiration for the past and a vision for the future. This transformation was initiated through the renovation of the utilitarian basement into a family suite. This space that was once partitioned into many separate rooms was reclaimed as a sanctum for connection. With each layer stripped away, its institutional past was shed, and the home’s original timeless identity of exposed timber framing was revitalized.

Overcoming the constraint of a modest budget, creativity took control. Locally sourced materials and ingenuity became an essential aspect of this project. A custom 3-inch stepped concrete countertop, that was portioned and mixed on-site, was crafted by Peter Braithwaite Studio’s skilled builders and acts as the organizational anchor of the gathering space - a testament to the importance of family and shared moments.

Every detail represents a balanced relation of tradition and contemporary; from custom-welded steel shelves to the meticulous craftsmanship of white oak millwork. The barn doors itself, represents the architectural style of the original windows, paying homage to the home's storied past. The family’s effort for the transformation is affirmed by the visit of the previous owners, a family of ten, overjoyed to see their beloved dwelling restored to its rightful place as a cherished family home.

In the end, this project was more than just a renovation. It was a testament to the enduring spirit of a home, where past and present is combine in a timeless matter, and where the promise of a bright future is a manifestation of its rich history.
