Poplar Street
Meaningful urban density requires more than just adding units; it demands architectural sensitivity that enriches the existing community. Located on Poplar Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia, this five-unit residential project directly addresses the city's pressing need for 'missing middle' housing. Designed to bridge the gap between traditional single-family homes and large-scale apartment blocks, the project demonstrates how gentle density can be thoughtfully introduced into a mature, tree-lined streetscape without overwhelming its historical context.
Drawing inspiration from the traditional residential vernacular of its neighbours, the building’s massing is defined by two prominent, steeply pitched gable volumes. This familiar form is expressed through a bold, contemporary material palette. The upper volumes are wrapped in a striking, vertically oriented Corten weathering steel, which will develop a rich, textured patina over time. These dual forms rest elegantly upon a solid, concrete plinth, firmly anchoring the structure to the site while achieving a timeless, industrial-yet-warm presence.
The fenestration strategy is carefully calibrated to balance the internal experience of the occupants with the external dynamics of a close-knit neighbourhood. A scattered, rhythmic arrangement of punched windows offers privacy while pulling dynamic, shifting natural light into the living spaces.
Within the units, the exterior's dramatic roofline translates into soaring, double-height vaulted ceilings that proudly display exposed wooden rafters. This celebration of natural materials continues throughout the interiors, where warm wood flooring and a central, wood-clad architectural volume seamlessly integrate a minimalist kitchen on the main floor with a lofted space above. The juxtaposition of these rich wooden textures against crisp, white walls creates a serene, light-filled environment that feels simultaneously expansive and intimate.
By introducing much-needed density through high-quality, highly crafted design, the Poplar Street project serves as a prototype for the future of Halifax’s urban growth, proving that missing middle housing can actively enhance both the architectural character of our city and the daily lives of its residents.
